Hot Bean Dish

Do you remember sitting on the front porch with grandma on a hot summer Sunday afternoon? Amusing family stories and neighborhood scuttlebutt were shared to the sounds of a squeaking rocking chair and the snapping of green beans. Grandma knew how to cook up beans like nobody's business, and we happily ate them even though we didn't like most green vegetables. To bring back some of that summer nostalgia, try our Hot Bean Dish. You can make it even when fresh beans are out of season! Simply cook frozen green, yellow and lima beans in boiling water. (Don't worry, grandma wouldn't mind that you're taking a shortcut.) Then make your Hot Bean Dish sauce out of butter, flour and Smith's Half & Half seasoned with pepper and Worcestershire. Combine the beans with the sauce, sprinkle with Parmesan and bake until bubbly. One taste of this Hot Bean Dish and you'll be transported back to that memory-rich, squeaky front porch with grandma.

How to Make

INGREDIENTS

Beans:

  • 1 package of frozen green beans
  • 1 package of yellow beans
  • 1 package of lima beans

Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup margarine or unsalted butter + 2 tbsp to dot on top later
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup Smith's Half & Half
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • Dash of pepper & Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Cook all veggies in boiling water till tender, drain. Set aside.
  3. To make sauce: Melt margarine in saucepan, stir in flour and keep stirring till mixed and bubbly. Slowly stir in a little Smith's Half & Half stirring continuously (so you won't have lumps). Add some more Half & Half, keep doing this till all Half & Half is mixed in. Stir in dash of pepper and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Put veggies in a greased baking dish, pour sauce over veggies and stir till combined.
  5. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese all over top and dot with the 2 tbsp of margarine on top of cheese. Bake 25-30 minutes till bubbly.
